Years ago Brian Potter and a friend started experimenting with different spices and developed a rub that they used on different meats and to cook with. They shared it with friends and family and gave it to folks to enjoy. When he moved to Virginia he continued making the spice mixture and kept sharing. Everyone that encountered his spice concoction suggested that he should sell it. He and his family settled in the Mobile area 14 years ago. Although Brian has a full time career in the steel industry he has a passion for cooking. After all these years, Brian has remained constant with his cooking and sharing his seasoning. About five years ago, he started taking his pursuit seriously and began entering contests and cookoffs. These competitions featured various culinary staples including barbeque, wings, chili and even oysters. Not only was he entering these contests, he was winning and placing in categories such as most original and best overall. Brian and his team have been traveling to to the annual National Barbeque Association’s competition in various locations across the United States. In 2013 they were the recipient of the NBBQA Award of Excellence – 1st place winner in the All Purpose Rub category – an honor in which Brian is most proud. The offical name of the seasoning mixture is Texas 1 Spice Gourmet Seasoning. The Texas portion of the name because he is originally from the state of Texas and the 1, because this one blend is all you need. Requests started coming in to add more heat to the spice so he did. He first introduced a Smoky Hot Flavor and then added a Chipotle blend and even a coffee combination he calls TeXpresso. Brian is also a big fan of Bloody Marys and even has a Bloody Mary Mix that can be combined with the wet ingredients that comprise the famous cocktail for one heck of a tasty beverage. There is great versatility to this product as well. Texas 1 Spice is not just for meats. It can be a flavor enhancer to veggies, dips, casseroles and more. The Potters put it on almost everything they eat! The demand for the product was getting to the point that they needed to find a location to house the operation. Brian and his wife, Shannon have recently opened an office and kitchen in Satsuma. LA Spice House is the name of the business where all the spices are blended “with love” as Brian says. You can purchase Texas 1 Spice Gourmet Seasoning online but it can also be found in retail locations in Mobile (Mosley’s Meats, Universal Supply, Bebo’s), Orange Beach (The Rod Room), Gulf Shores (Jack Edwards Airport) and Elberta (Elberta Grocery).
